Examining learning difficulties and alternative conceptions students face in learning about hybridization in organic chemistry

Chemistry education research has demonstrated that chemistry concepts are abstract, complex, and challenging for students to learn understand. is the branch of science deals with nature behavior atoms, bond formation hybridization both play a crucial role in discipline. The concept description hybrid orbitals, prediction angles molecular geometry, reactivity some organic compounds. Development conceptual understanding important effective learning about formation, structure, angle, acidity, reactivity. This study aimed examine alternative conceptions hold; challenges face hybridization; strategies they use solve problems. investigation took place at City College New York, an urban, minority-serving institute. Our method data collection comprised survey made up Likert-type, open-ended questions as well hybridization-related set number participants was n = 103. findings suggest developing such resonance structures, then relating it structure molecules, its function. presentation oversimplified manner students’ reliance on memorization can hinder development meaningful learning. Students misestimate their competencies abilities which negatively impact poor performers prevent them from addressing deficiencies hybridization. We instructors present topic three levels representations, provide opportunities active knowledge construction, nurture visualization atomic orbitals.
